CSKA Cruise, Barcelona Rout Panathaikos, Seven Teams Undefeated

Defending champion CSKA Moscow beat Panionios easily on the road while Barcelona hammered Panathinaikos at home as the Euroleague continued with Week Two action.

Erazem Lorbek scored 17 points and Nikos Zisis added 14 as CSKA Moscow shot over 55% from the floor in winning 86-52 at Panionios to improve to 2-0 atop Group D. CSKA veteran guard .R. Holden joins Luis Scola and Marcus Brown as only players in Euroleague history to score 2,000 points. Also undefeated in the group is Efes Pilsen, which had Milos Vujanic score 19 points to lead five players in double figures in an 81-71 road win against AJ Milano, which joined Panionios at 0-2. Partizan surprised Real Madrid at home as five players hit double digits led by 18 points from Aleksandar Rasic.

The most highly anticipated game of the Week came in Barcelona, but the Spaniards played an unfriendly host in thrashing 2007 champion Panathinaikos 90-66. Juan Carlos Navarro poured in 21 points and Ersan Ilyasova added 14 for the winners, who improved to 2-0. Just like Panathinaikos, Asseco Prokom is also 1-1 in the group after a 91-62 win at home over Sluc Nancy.

Daniel Ewing scored 32 points, David Logan tallied 18 and Filip Dylewicz added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Barcelona was joined atop the Group by 2008 semifinalist Montepaschi Siena, which routed Zalgiris on the road 93-67. Rimantas Kaukenas tallied 27 points while Romain Sato added 18 and Ksistof Lavrinovic added 15 points for Siena. Zalgiris dropped to 0-2 in the group just like Nancy.

Ioannis Bourousis collected 20 points and 13 rebounds and Josh Childress scored 15 points as Olympiacos improved to a perfect 2-0 atop Group A with an 83-72 win over Unicaja, which dropped to 1-1. Cibona is also 2-0 after holding off Le Mans 58-54 on the road. Earl Calloway scored 19 points and Nikola Prkacin added 17 points for the winners. Le Mans dropped to 0-2 in the group.

The five-time Euroleague champion Maccabi Tel Aviv finally notched its first victory of the 2008-09 campaign, beating Air Avellino 90-83 at home to improve to 1-1. Carlos Arroyo led the way with 20 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists while Marcus Brown scored 15 points. Avellino dropped to 0-2.

Tau Ceramica Alone Atop Group C

Group C's lone undefeated team left is Tau Ceramica at 2-0 after winning 91-90 on the road against Union Olimpija. Mirza Teletovic won the game with a game-winning floating layup with 2.7 seconds to play. Teletovic led Tau with 18 points while Tiago Splitter added 16 points and Igor Rakecevic had 13. Olimpjia dropped to 0-2 in the group. Lottomatica Roma notched its first win of the tourament, using a 17-0 run to beat DKV Joventut 85-71. Ibrahim Jaaber scored 17 points, Sani Becirovic had 15 and Brandon Jennings added six points and three rebounds for Roma. Both teams dropped to 1-1 while Joventut continue to wait for Ricky Rubio to return from his surgery.

Fenerbahce and Alba Berlin are both 1-1 as well after Fenerbahce beat Berlin at home 82-73. Mirsad Turkcan collected 25 points and nine rebounds while Damir Kaan Mrsic had 17 points. The game also featured the Euroleague debut of Turkey's young talent Enes Kanter. The power forward is the first player born in 1992 to play in the Euroleague and the 16-year-old scored five points, grabbed three rebounds and swiped a steal in just over nine minutes of action.
